Chumlung UK’s 11th Convention: First-Ever Female Leadership Elected

London. Mrs Kamala Sendang Limbu has been elected as the President of Kirat Yakthung Chumlung UK, while Biswas Dip Tigela has been elected as the General Secretary.

Mrs. Sendang won the presidency with 439 votes in the election held during the 11th convention on the 13th and 14th of September 2024 in Hounslow, London. Her closest competitor, Ganesh Ijam, secured 349 votes, while Amrita Palungwa received 85 votes.

Similarly, Santkumar Hukpa Chongbang, Dipendra Yakso, and Rajen Labung have been elected as Vice Presidents. Chongbang received 404 votes, Yakso garnered 390 votes, and Labung secured 377 votes. Vijay Lingthep obtained 315 votes, and Tara Prasad Kandangwa got 325 votes, according to the election committee.

Sanu Subba and Sakuntala Nembang were elected unopposed as the Women’s Vice President and Secretary, respectively, by the Women’s Committee (Thamendingma).

Biswas Dip Tigela has been elected as the General Secretary, receiving 417 votes and defeating the outgoing General Secretary, Jurendra Khajum, who got 358 votes.

Mahesh Kumar Vanem won the position of Secretary with 380 votes, defeating his competitor, Lahang Chemjong, who received 344 votes.

Khagendra Lavati was elected as Treasurer with 418 votes, while his competitor, Dhankumar Kambang, secured 334 votes.

Deukumar Pandhak and Sabita Labung Limbu were elected unopposed as Co-Treasurers.

Retired Major Chitraj Chongbang served as the Chairman of the Election Board, with members including Retired Lt. Siri Samyo, Mrs. Durga Pangma, Karn Prangden, and Secretary Nar Thamsuhang.

Chairman Chongbang administered the oath of office and confidentiality in the Limbu language to the newly elected working committee.

Ganesh Ijam, the nearest competitor for the presidency, congratulated the new working committee, while the newly elected President, Kamala Sendang, expressed her commitment to serve.

It is estimated that around 20,000 members of the Limbu community, a tribal group from Nepal, have settled in the UK. The Kirat Yakthung Chumlung organization, established in 2003, has elected its first female president.

Chumlung has 16 branches across the UK, and out of 2,909 registered members, 943 attended and voted. This is the third time the leadership has been selected through an election process.
