Birtamod, Jhapa, The seventh National Convention of the Nepal Janamukti Party (Nepal People Liberation Party) is scheduled to be held in Birtamod, Jhapa, eastern Nepal, on Bhadra 27, 28 and 29.
The party has presented the three-day convention as an important milestone in its political and organisational journey. It will be held under the main slogan: “Our Commitment is to Build Multi-Ethnic Democratic Socialism and a Prosperous Nepal.” The party’s promotional materials also carry the message: “Unity, Struggle and Transformation—Our Campaign to Build a Prosperous Nepal.”
Party Chairman Khadga Prasad Palungwa has called on party leaders, cadres, supporters and well-wishers to actively participate in and support the convention. He said the seventh National Convention would be important in determining the party’s future political direction, strengthening its organisation and expanding its presence nationwide.
Recognising the reality of Nepal’s multi-ethnic society, the Nepal Janamukti Party has consistently advocated proportional representation at all levels of the state, identity-based federalism, autonomy, self-governance, secularism, and linguistic and cultural equality as its principal political agendas. The party’s publicly stated policies call for the proportional participation of Indigenous nationalities, Dalits, Madhesis, Muslims, women and marginalised communities in state policymaking.
The Nepal Janamukti Party assumed its present form following the unification of several identity-oriented political forces. An agreement among the Rastriya Janamukti Party, the Federal Limbuwan Party Nepal and the Limbuwan National Committee was endorsed by the party’s Statute Convention held in Baisakh 2081 BS. The party’s name was subsequently changed to the “Nepal Janamukti Party.”
Following the unification, the party announced an organisational structure comprising MS Thapa as patron, Ram Bahadur Tumbahamphe as a founding member, DK Buddhist as senior leader, KP Palungwa as chairman and Keshav Suryavanshi as executive chairman. The party has maintained that Nepal’s Constitution needs to be amended and rewritten to establish a fully proportional electoral system and a plurinational state with identity-based autonomy and self-governance.
The party’s sixth National Convention, held in Dharan, Sunsari, in 2078 BS, elected KP Palungwa as chairman and Keshav Suryavanshi as executive chairman. The convention also elected a new central leadership.
The upcoming seventh National Convention in Birtamod is expected to make important decisions concerning the party’s political direction, organisational structure and future leadership.
