321st Birth Anniversary of Limbu Language Protector and Promoter Tyeangsih Sirijanga Celebrated

On Saturday, 5 December 2025, the Youth Committee of Kirat Yakthung Chumlung UK, Wensa Chumbo (Youth Committee) UK, organized a virtual Zoom programme to celebrate the 321st birth anniversary of Sirijanga Singhthebe, the protector and promoter of the Limbu language.

The event was graced by the chief guest Sanu Subba, Central Vice-Chairperson of Kirat Yakthung Chumlung UK. Special presentations on the life and contributions of the great martyr Sirijanga Singhthebe were delivered by Prof. Amar Tumyahang, Federal Treasurer of Kirat Yakthung Chumlung and Associate Professor, and Raju (Subba) Limbu, Limboo Language Curriculum Officer at the Sikkim Government’s Department of Education and Chairperson of Yakthung Sapshok Chumbo, Sikkim, India.

Comments on their presentations were provided by Bhima Khajum ‘Musum’ and Gyanhu Furumbo ‘Charpe’, a language, literature, and Mukummalung Tangsep activist.

The speakers engaged in a detailed discussion on the works and contributions of Sirijanga Singhthebe, while participants also put forward their questions and curiosities regarding his life and legacy.

Sirijanga Singhthebe was a deeply spiritual and extraordinary figure who devoted himself to Yuma Mang from a young age and was also a courageous warrior. Belonging to the Singhthebe clan of the Yakthung Limbu community, he was born in the 17th century in Tellok, Ward 4 of Sirijanga Rural Municipality. While working to preserve the Limbu language and script, he was killed in Martham village, West Sikkim, India by Tibetan Bhotiya lamas, who tied him to a tree and shot him with arrows. To honour this great martyr and warrior, his birth anniversary is celebrated every year.

Kirat Yakthung Wensa Chumbo UK has been marking the birth anniversary of Sirijanga Singhthebe in various ways for many years, but this year the programme was organized in a special manner. The event was chaired by Hangma Lawati, Chairperson of Kirat Yakthung Wensa Chumbo UK, and conducted by Tek Mabohang (Niraj), Secretary of the Language and Literature Department.

Kirat Yakthung Wensa Chumbo UK has continually been carrying out important activities related to the Yakthung Limbu community—promoting and uplifting language, script, literature, customs, culture, history, and festivals. The organization has also been playing a vital role in guiding the new generation towards their linguistic, cultural, and ancestral identity.
