Preparations Complete for the Biggest Nepali Football Tournament in the UK – 50 Teams to Compete in the Gurkha Cup

May 17, 2025 – A press conference was held to announce the preparations for the 23rd Gurkha Cup, the biggest and most prestigious football tournament in the UK’s Nepali community.
Tamu Dhee UK organized the press conference at its own building, Tamu Bhavan in Farnborough. It was said that this year’s tournament will follow the same format as previous years. There are three categories in the tournament: 32 teams will compete in the main category, 16 teams in the veterans’ category, and 2 teams in the women’s category.
It has been reported that 12 football grounds have been prepared for the competition, which will be held on Sunday, May 25 at the Queen’s Avenue Sports Ground in Aldershot, UK.
The prize money is as follows: The winner of the main category will receive £3,000, The winner of the veterans’ category will receive £1,800, The winner of the women’s category will receive £600, Second-place teams in all categories will also receive cash prizes. According to the organizers, £90,000 will be spent to host the tournament.
The main attraction of this year’s event is the presence of famous Nepali women’s football player Sabitra Bhandari ‘Samba’. Another highlight will be a parachute display.
The press conference was held under the chairmanship of Tamu Dhee UK President Jhumkaji Gurung. Coordinator Deepak Ghale gave detailed information about the event, and Parshu Gurung delivered a welcome speech. The program was conducted by General Secretary Dr. Bishal Gurung.
The Gurkha Cup is considered the largest and most prestigious football tournament in the UK’s Nepali community. This year, there will be 103 stalls, and the organizers expect around 18,000 spectators and participants.
