Birtamod, Jhapa: Khadga Prasad (KP) Palungwa has been re-elected chair of the Nepal Janamukti Party. The party’s Seventh National Convention, held at Atithi Sadan in Birtamod, Jhapa, from 12 to 14 September 2026 (27–29 Bhadra 2083 BS), elected Palungwa to serve a third term as chair.
The three-day convention elected Mrs Kamala Thapa Magar as senior vice-chair, while Baldeep Prabhashwar Rai and Balkrishna Khanal were elected vice-chairs. Padam Jabegu was elected general secretary, and Bishnu Thamden, Purna Bahadur Rana Magar and Indira Sharma were elected deputy general secretaries.
Similarly, Pradeep Neyong was elected secretary, Shivahang Rai treasurer, and Raj Kumar Tamang, among others, a central committee member. The convention also formed an expanded central leadership comprising office-bearers and members.
Held under the theme, “Multi-ethnic Democratic Socialism and the Building of a Prosperous Nepal—Our Commitment,” the convention discussed the party’s political direction, organisational strengthening, identity-based federalism, proportional representation, autonomy and self-governance.
Ahead of the convention, the party had described the gathering as an important opportunity to determine its future political direction and expand its organisation nationwide.
The Nepal Janamukti Party has consistently advocated federalism, secularism, ethnic and linguistic equality, and a fully proportional electoral system in Nepal. It presents itself as one of the country’s earliest political forces to raise the issue of federal governance.
Palungwa was previously elected chair at the party’s Sixth National Convention, held in Dharan, Sunsari, in 2021. That convention elected Keshav Suryavanshi as executive chair.
The newly elected leadership is expected to expand the party’s organisational base and advance its agendas of identity, proportional inclusion and federalism more strongly.
