Activists demand Yakthung language as an official state language in Nepal’s province one

31 May. A group of independent activists has demanded province one government to incorporate Yakthung (language) as an official state language.

Activists affiliated to Yakthung Language Implementation Concerned Group(YLICG)has submitted memorandum to the provincial government to implement Yakthung language as an official state language.

YLICG on Friday drew the attention of the heads of the provinces, chief ministers and all ministers to implement the Yakthung (Limbu) language as the language of government business. “We have submitted a memorandum to the provincial government, pressuring the implementation of the Yakthung (Limbu) as an official state language,” said Mohan Tigela, a leader of activist group. He stated that one of the cabinet ministers was positive about incorporating the issue raised by the group.

Another activist, Amit Thebe informed that the group has submitted a memorandum to the office of the Governor Parshuram Khapung, Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki, Social Development Minister Panchakarna Rai, Internal Affairs and Law Minister Leela Ballabh Adhikari, State Chief Secretary Kedarnath Sharma.

“The government will take initiatives to implement the language recommended by the Language Commission. For this, we will hold internal discussions and carry out necessary exercises,” the law minister Adhikari assured, “It will be implemented as long as there is stability in the government.”

The activists also staged a peaceful sit in protest in front of the office of the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers. During the sit-in, placards with various slogans written in Yakthung language (Sirijanga script), Khas Nepali and English language were displayed by the group.

In accordance with the provisions of clause (a) of clause (6) of Article 28 of the Constitution of Nepal 2072, “The Language Commission shall make a recommendation to the Government of Nepal after determining the criteria to be met to be recognized as the language of government work”. The group reminded a recommendation report that had been submitted by the Language commission to the Government of Nepal under the title of ‘Determination of language bases and language-related recommendations, 2078. They demanded to fulfil the ardent wishes and aspirations of the indigenous communities of province one.

The Commission has included 11 languages ​​Maithili, Limbu, Bhojpuri, Bajjika, Tamang, Newar, Gurung, Magar, Awadhi, Tharu and Doteli language as official languages. It recommended Yakthung (Limbu) and Maithili languages ​​to as an official state language in province one. According to the constitution, the government of Nepal has ensured the provincial governments the right to formulate necessary laws in the provincial government as per the clause (2) of article 7 of the constitution.

In the memorandum, they have also reflected the context of legislative preparations for the implementation of Tamang and Nepali language in Bagmati province, which has been passed and published in the gazette and implemented as a law last year.

Mohan Tigela, Amit Thebe, Alok Hangsrong, Hitram Tilling, Dhanendra Jabegu, Prabeg Hangshrong, Binita Maden, Nilipha Subba, Swarnimhang Phombo, Sesehang Phiyak, Dilli Lingdom, Dinesh Tilling, Yowahang Tumbahangfe, Binu Chemjong, Bishnu Thamden, Tangsang Laoti, Abi Chemjong, Phipraj Begha and others had signed the memorandum before handing over to the executives.
